Dr. Cool & Pride

Pride tells us his story

By Alexa G. & Helena H.
On October 6th, Dr. Cool and Pride came to our school and presented the students with a motivational presentation including Pride’s view on self esteem, conflict resolution, good decision making, pride and racial diversity, confidence in learning, and anti-bullying. Pride told us an inspirational story about his growing up in a biracial family and being the first one in his family to attend college. Pride’s story was simple; he went into collage majoring in economics and realized that it wasn’t for him. He then realized what he wanted to major in-percussion! He had the stamina to practice for six weeks, day after day on his drums. Then he finally auditioned. After that, he waited and waited for the results. Finally, they called, sadly he did not make it, but he did not quit. He soon became head of a marching band. He explained to us the compelling feeling when he came into an open stadium leading the marching band in front of many people. He was afraid, but he had the courage to do it! He knew that if he was not confident and if he didn’t have pride, courage, and stamina he wouldn’t be the success he is today. Once the story was done we cranked up some tunes and danced the day away!

Student Council

By Alexa G. and Helena H.

At Holmes School our student government is known as the student council. The student council has two primary goals; fund raising and serving not only the school but also the community. The student council consists of a president, vice president, secretary, treasure, and representatives.

The President helps run the meetings; helps organize events, and makes decisions with the student council. The Vice President helps the president with duties, schedules the school store, and fills in for the president. The secretary takes notes for student council so we can remember what happens at meetings. The treasurer deals with money, manages banking and the checkbook, and directs the school store inventory. The Reps (Representatives) explain what is happening in student council to their class; they also think of ideas for student council, and if you have any ideas for student council the person you tell is the Rep. Then they well tell student council your idea.

But, the question is, what does the student council do during meetings? What are some fundraisers student council plans to do? Well, during the meetings they talk about upcoming events, such as, school store, food drive, and fundraisers. Some of the fundraisers student council might do are sell recyclable bags that say “Holmes School”, and t-shirts, and make holiday-grams for people to send to others at the school for a small fee.

The Student Council is very important to Holmes School and its community.
