Trish Quane Memorial

Six sorrowful years ago, one member of our Holmes School family passed away from a train accident. Trish Quane was a wonderful woman who was a speech and language teacher at Holmes School. On Thursday, May 25th, our school is hosting a memorial event for Ms. Quane. The chorus will be The Blessing to honor her. There will also be a juggler there to teach you how to juggle! Please attend this event in memory of Ms. Trish Quane on May 25th from 6:30-8:00 in the multipurpose room.

blue and cloudless
sad and soulless
simple but so unique
amazing, tasteful
strong and powerful
raging with thunder
crying with millions of tear drops
angry
blue, black, pink and purple
striking with powerful thunder bolts
crushing the earth
showing what it is capable of doing
so gentle but strong at the same time

Irish Dancing

There was a fantastic show for Saint Patrick’s Day! Many talented Irish dancers put lots of hard work into learning the dances and performing them to the school! Their director, Mrs. Rehfield, also danced with them for their last hard shoe number, the treble reel. Hard shoes are especially loud on wood, similar to tap shoes. Soft shoes are more quiet than hard shoes. They are made softer materials. All the dances were full of life and excitement. Talk about St. Patrick’s day spirit! Fun Run Poem

Anxious, waiting, the time has come,
Watching, ready, set to go,
A signal so quick, like the speed of light,
Ready to run,
The time is right,

Arms pumping,
Legs sprinting,
Dashing,
Dodging,
Blasting past,

Lungs gasping,
Moving,
Motion,
Almost to the finish line,

Cheers abrupt,
Hands waving,
Smiles and memories,
Really worth saving,

Winners with a smiling face,
They sure are glad,
They ran the race!

In the end all is great,
We all head for home to celebrate!

Olympic Day Poem

May 26th is the big day!
The whole school goes outside,
And does these cool activities, like going down a bouncy slide.

It happens every year,
It really is a blast,
Everyone is enjoying as their healthy hearts beat fast.

The whole school gets exercise,
Working in the sun,
But no one ever notices ‘cause we’re having so much fun!

Did I forget to mention
The beginning of the day?
The chorus sings a peppy song before we start our play.

When Olympic Day is done,
everyone’s sad it ends.
We go inside to eat a treat with all our classroom friends.

Get excited, get jumpy!
It’ll be awesome!
Fun and games and popsicles! Hey, give me one!

Spelling Bee

We had a great turn out for the Spelling Bee! There were many intelligent children there who studied hard, attempting to make it to the final round. Thanks to Mrs. Hackmiller and Mr. McCauley for announcing the spelling words! Mr. Grace, Mrs. Zelinski, and Mrs. O’Malley were spectacular judges for the preliminary round. The fantastic judges for the finalist round were Mrs. Peterson, Mr. Williams, and Mrs. Manuel. Everything worked out “bee-autifully”. In the final round, more challenging words were announced. We asked one of the spelling bee winners (Peyton) and she said, ‘‘ I’m glad they declared co. winners because there was tough competition. Another participant said,’’ Study hard, and remember to have fun!”

The Geography Bee

The one and only 2011 Geography Bee was a great success! There were 20 contestants: ten 4th graders and ten 5th graders. The coordinators were Mrs. Circo and Mrs. Stone, the parent of a Holmes student. There were three rounds: the preliminary round (for every contestant), the final round (top 10 contestants), and the championships (three last competitors) and each contestant got 7 questions per round. All the competing students were prepared and did their very best, and the Geography Bee ended nicely. By the end of the competition there were only three students left, all in 5th grade. In third place: Peyton O.! Second place: Maggie F.! Finally in first place: (For the 2nd year in a row) Peter G!
